Webinar – Analysis of House Bill (HB) 6: What You Need to Know About the Statutory Changes Involving Student Discipline

HB 6 is now law, as it was signed/approved by the Governor on June 20 and takes effect immediately.

HB 6 contains significant revisions to select provisions in the Texas Education Code Chapter 37 that directly impact how schools discipline student misconduct and disruptive behavior. Approved into law, HB 6 will rescript disciplinary processes and procedures with an objective to enhance classroom teacher authority, increase student mental health, and ensure that appropriate measures are taken for serious and dangerous behavior, even if the serious offense occurs outside the school environment. Jam-packed with many changes, among them, HB 6 removes the option for a District of Innovation (DOI) plan to include an exemption from any provision in Chapter 37.

Additionally, HB 6 aims to correct the e-cigarettes (vaping) issue that resulted in DAEP overcrowding in many school districts throughout the state. Furthermore, HB 6 incorporates statutory guidelines specific to In-School-Suspension (ISS), finally providing some needed clarity between ISS and Out-of-School Suspension (OSS). We hope you can join us for this very important webinar as you continue planning for the upcoming school year.
