Seminar - Administrators' Survivial Guide for Employee Leaves

Administrators' Survivial Guide for Employee Leaves

Administering your district's leaves and absences policy and program has always been challenging, to say the least. In 2009, it has become even more of a challenge. In January of 2009, two major federal employment law statutes and implementing regulations were significantly affected. First, the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act became effective and significantly changed the landscape for addressing employment-related disability issues. Then, the Department of Labor's revisions to the FMLA regulations became effective, resulting in a major overhaul of the original FMLA regulations and all-new regulations implementing the 2008 statutory amendments for military exigency and military caregiver leaves.

This day-long session will address all the changes and additions to these laws, as well as refresh you on the state laws that haven't changed. We will look at how all the various leave, illness, and injury provisions work together. In addition, we will teach you how to put these laws, including the changes, into practice in your districts.

Topics We'll Cover:

  • FMLA
  • ADA
  • USERRA
  • Workers Compensation
  • Pregnancy Discrimination Act
  • Dealing with Chronic Illness
  • Administration of State and Federal Leave Laws
  • How to Handle the Return of an Employee
  • What Happens When Termination is the Answer
