Copyright Fundamentals Webinar Series

"To use" or "not to use" ...copyrighted material, that is.

Schools have some ability to use copyright protected materials in limited circumstances, but do you know those limits? Not knowing the limits can cost your district money and embarrassment. Copyright is a federal right awarded to authors, musicians, and artists. It allows them to prevent copying, performing, and displaying their products by those who have not paid for those rights. This series will discuss the foundation concepts of copyright, and then explore how these concepts affect different aspects of the school program.

Copyright Basics - This foundation session is for those who know little or nothing about copyright and how it affects schools. You will learn about the rights of a copyright holder, who owns copyrights, how you might get in trouble using copyrighted material, and gain a basic understanding of fair use. Even if you already know a little about copyright, this session will refresh your understanding and bring you up to speed on new laws and interpretations.
Copyright for Fine Arts – Your band, orchestra, choir, theatre arts group, visual artists, or any group that performs plays or musicals must heed special copyright rules. This session will explore the guidelines and regulations that affect those areas differently from standard classroom uses.  From public performance to background music to school dances, copyright issues are waiting to bedevil you. You should have a foundation understanding of copyright to get the most from this session.

Copyright for Core Curriculum – The core curriculum classes (English Language Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies, or Foreign Language) share a set of copyright concerns regarding reproduction and performance of materials, protecting materials purchased with school funds, adapting materials for mainstreamed students, and generally making an enticing learning environment.  You should have a foundation understanding of copyright to get the most from this session.

Copyright for Career Education – Applying the traditional school fair use rules is sometimes difficult in technology and career education curriculum.  These areas have a unique set of materials and students and copyright concerns about reproduction, adaptation, and performance of the works of others. This session will highlight spotting what is protected by copyright and what cannot be protected and is therefore free to use. You should have a foundation understanding of copyright to get the most from this session.

Managing Copyright in Your Building – Do you know just enough about copyright to get yourself and your building into trouble?  This could be the session for you. If you are a school leader, you need to know how to manage the copyrighted materials in your building in a way that maximizes their value to the educational program and still keeps you within the limits of the law. It’s a bonus if you can maintain the friendship and respect of your colleagues. You should have a foundation understanding of copyright to get the most from this session.
